Just do a 7 pass secure erase (35 if you are super paranoid and have some time to waste) using disk util from the boot up thumb drive.

This will have absolutely no effect on SSDs (http://cseweb.ucsd.edu/users/swanson/papers/Fast2011SecErase.pdf) beyond simply wearing them out. A single pass is more than adequate.

Are you talking about the mac mini or the mac mini server?

if it's the dual HD server, then you won't get a built in DVD drive.

Personally if you want to keep power down, i'd invest in something like a qnap TS410 NAS. It'll take 4 drives, up to 8TB and will allow you to protect the data by using RAID 1,5 or 6. You can plug your existing external drives into it. It has built in mac/win/ftp sharing, upnp, itunes sharing, iphone access and will draw less than 40 watts at peak usage. Then use your dell for ripping dvd's. I'm assuming it's a hackintosh if you are running handbrake?

    amazon linkie (http://www.amazon.co.uk/QNAP-TS-410-Server-iPhone-Streaming/dp/B002PML096/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1298551987&sr=1-1)

    :D

EDIT: just noticed your question to the other poster. This is indeed headless and can do bitorrent in the background.

Hmm its actually a windows PC (dont hurt me :( ) haha
so i remote in via logmein and use it that way. Im ok for a cd drive as i dont really need anything which uses a cd apart from installing the OS

Just looking at that NAS...oooooooo have you got one?
Whats the interface like? I am put off by linux web interfaces, id rather have something like logmein. if that makes sense? I feel its more controllable...but please correct me if im wrong

    Heyo,
I had to sent my Mac in to get something like AppleCare for it. Before doing that, I turned on FileVault so that they couldn't read my data. Now I want to turn it off again, but I somehow do not have enough space. Reason being: I have 8 GB left, the FileVault file hogs 37 GB - while my home directory only takes up 12 GB right now.
I was once asked after logging out if I wanted my Vault to be optimized, but stupidly I clicked no. Does anyone know how I can get that option back?

And what's the deal with FileVault anyway. It's for portables, isn't it? But it's totally useless since laptop drives are too small to fit two home directories of most users.

    Happy new year
    Sebastian

I've been researching some of the OCZ PCI solutions (much cheaper of course) and I doubt I will be able to boot in Mac Pro with that card, is that true ?

Why would you think that? If you have the correct PCIe slot, it should allow you to boot from it. A quick email to their tech support might allow you know for sure.

HOWEVER! If you're thinking about the cheaper versions, look at their transfer speeds. Only PCI solutions which offer a clear speed enhancement over SATA 2 or 3 should be bought. Why waste a PCI slot if a SATA drive has the same performance (assuming you have more SATA slots available than PCI slots)?

When it comes right down to it there are many ways to look at this dispute:

Apple pioneered the "i"XXXX nomenclature, and therefore it seems a little cheesy and cheap for any other company to release products with this format (imho). It's a little bit like Adidas releasing shoes with nike's "Air" name tacked on...

On the other hand, Cisco did patent the name and release a product with the name - I'm sure apple could've come up with another cool sounding name for the product (one that hasn't been tossed around rumor sites for years).

At the end of the day, it's really just a corporate debacle, one that has virtually no import to the consumer end, since the cellphone device that Apple has announced will almost certainly be released anyhow (perhaps not as the iPhone in all countries).

Cisco (seemingly) played by the rules, but at the same time their decision to utilize an apple standard naming format is bigtime unoriginal and deserves to be doomed to the depths of whatever hell exists for such corporate donkeys.

I'm going to wait until October or January to see exactly what the hell is going on over there. There's just so many cinflicting reports, IBM to announce desktop PowerPC, but it doesn't support Altivec, Apple created Marklar, an x86 version of OSX, all so confusing.:(

OS X won't let you boot legacy software without a superdrive. I've tried at least 100 times. It can't be done. Boot Camp will not allow you to install from a USB drive. If you have the ISO of windows 7 just install it in parallels and enjoy.

What he said :) Sorry man.

The only way I know how to do it is to copy the quote and paste it manually within the quoted post. If the quote came from another post, as in your example, you can use the multi-quote button (http://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/buttons/multiquote_off.gif) to get both quotes in your reply, then cut and paste the original post into the post that quoted it.

Honestly, what are the biggest risks of JBing an iPad? As much as I want the benefits, I can't afford a new one if I were to do anything irreversible to this one.

The biggest risk is you'll follow the advise of a jerk that doesn't even have an iPad, and believes he has all the answers..., in my opinion.

The iPad depends on flash memory, and flash memory has a limited number of write cycles, there is always a possibility that any memory upgrade will brick your device, but Apple uses pretty darn good flash memory, and I've yet to do it in over four years of jail breaking...

I will acknowledge it is not for everyone, and there is some risk involved. I've been convinced that I've bricked my unit more than once, yet I've always managed to recover it. Part of that just depends on how stubborn one is. How well one can read and follow directions.

Ideally you have a friend who can help you jailbreak the first time, kind of walk you through it, but even without such a friend it is possible to do it without issues.

This is the first time I've heard of such a thing...this is horrible
I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but can't they just demolish this house and rebuild a new one on the same plot? I know it'll be expensive...I am just asking :o

YEs, they could, but they can't afford the $61,000 clean up fee. They certainly won't be able to afford demolition and reconstruction. That would be at least twice the clean up fee, not to mention put the new mortgage way out of their price range.
If I were them, I would go after the relator and his/her company and previous owner. There should be a way to split up the cost of the clean up that is fair for everyone involved without the need to walk away from the house.
